Responsibilities
Code Enforcement responds to concerns from residents that affect the quality of life within the City such as zoning, overgrown lots or yards, inoperative vehicles, snow removal, maintenance of properties, illegal signs and public nuisances. Systematic inspections are also performed throughout the City to ensure properties are in compliance with City code.
Public nuisances could include tall grass, weeds or other unwanted vegetation in excess of 12 inches, auto parts, cars, appliances, trash, litter, animal waste, as well as the upkeep of fences and swimming pools and the fences around swimming pools.
Code Violations
After observing or receiving a complaint, a code enforcement officer will inspect the property for code violations. If there is a code violation, the officer will attempt to make contact with the property owner or responsible person, or will leave a courtesy notice, or have a certified letter sent to the property owner or responsible person for the property.
The goal is to obtain voluntary compliance from the property owner or responsible person for the property. On occasions, the city may have to take steps to resolve the issue.
